Energy bills can be a stretch — especially when winter or summer hits. The good news? Your state government offers concessions and rebates that can take real money off your bill, and we’re here to help you claim every dollar you’re entitled to.
These three words get used a lot. Here’s the simple version:
To be eligible for any of these concessions you must be a Fig Energy account holder and hold one of these cards:
Once you’ve found a concession you’re eligible for, getting it added to your bill is quick. Choose whichever way suits you:
We’ll check your card details with Centrelink (with your permission) and then apply the concession to your bill.
Most concessions you can sign up for through us. But a few are run directly by the government — we’ll point you in the right direction in each state section. Here’s the short list:
Regardless of your eligibility for a financial rebate, if you or someone in your home uses life support equipment, you must register it with us. This is a critical safety measure to ensure we can provide you with important information about any planned power outages.
If you a resident, hold a listed eligible card, and the energy account for your principal place of residence must be for residential use only, there’s a good chance you can save hundreds of dollars a year. Here’s what’s on offer.
Victorian Concessions Information Line: 1800 658 521 (free call)
The big one — a year-round 17.5% discount on your electricity.
What you get | A 17.5% rebate on your electricity usage and service charges, every day of the year. |
Who it’s for | You can apply for this concession if you are the electricity account holder and have one of the following eligible cards: Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card and Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card. |
How to get it | Just register your concession card with us — we’ll do the rest. The discount appears automatically on every bill. |
Good to know | The concession is calculated after any retailer discounts or solar credits have been deducted from your bill. The concession applies to your annual bill amount above a set threshold. For the most current threshold amount, please visit the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) website. If you are eligible, the concession can be backdated for up to 12 months. Households with very high electricity bills may need to apply for the Excess Electricity Concession to continue receiving the full rebate. |
For households with high electricity bills, the discount keeps going.
What you get | a 17.5% rebate on your electricity usage and service costs that are above the annual threshold. For the most current threshold amount, please visit the DFFH website. |
Who it’s for | You need to already qualify for the Annual Electricity Concession and your bills need to be high enough to hit the trigger. |
How to get it | We’ll send you an application form when your bills get close to the threshold. You fill it in, sign it, and send it back to Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH). |
Good to know | If you already get the Life Support or Medical Cooling Concession, you don’t need to do anything — you’re assessed automatically. The concession is calculated after any retailer discounts or solar credits have been deducted from your bill |
Extra summer electricity discount if a temperature-related medical condition makes cooling essential.
What you get | An additional 17.5% off your electricity from 1 November to 30 April each year — during the summer period. |
Who it’s for | You hold an eligible concession card AND you (or someone living with you permanently) has a medical condition that affects your body’s ability to regulate temperature. Pre-approved conditions include Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, and Motor Neurone Disease, among others. |
How to get it | You will need to download the Medical Cooling Concession application form, which must be completed by you and your doctor. If your medical condition is on the government’s pre-approved list, return the completed form to us. If your condition is not on the pre-approved list, the form must be sent to the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) for assessment first. |
Good to know | This concession is paid in addition to the Annual Electricity Concession. The person with the medical condition does not need to be the electricity account holder. Unlike other concessions, retailer discounts are not factored into the calculation of this benefit. This concession can be backdated for up to 12 months. |
Helps cover the running cost of life-support equipment at home.
What you get | This discount is equivalent to the annual fixed electricity charge set by the Victorian government. This value is calculated based on your electricity price and applied to your bill. |
Who it’s for | You hold an eligible concession card AND you (or someone you live with) needs a DFFH approved life-support machine at home, verified by your doctor. |
How to get it | Get the Life Support Concession and Machine Notification form from us or DFFH. The form must be completed by you and your doctor, then send it back to us. |
Good to know | Eligible machines include intermittent peritoneal dialysis machines, oxygen concentrators and haemodialysis machines. Most continuous positive airways pressure machines do not meet this threshold. This concession can be backdated for up to 12 months, or from your concession card start date, whichever is more recent. Customers in an embedded network (e.g., an apartment building with a single meter) need to apply for the Non-Mains Life Support Concession directly with the government. |
A one-off grant to help you catch up on an overdue bill during a financial crisis.
What you get | The grant provides a payment towards your overdue electricity bill, which is paid directly to us and credited to your account. The maximum grant amount available over a two-year period is set by the government. For the most current grant amount, please visit the DFFH website. |
Who it’s for | You may be eligible for this grant if you are the account holder, are at risk of disconnection, and have no way of paying your bill without assistance. To qualify, you must either hold a valid Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card, or Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card; or be part of a low-income household, even if you do not hold a concession card. You must also meet at least one of the specific hardship criteria set by the government, such as a recent loss of income or high unexpected costs for essential items. |
How to get it | Contact us and get an application form. Or you can apply directly with DFFH online at URGS HARDSHIP APPLICATION website. |
Good to know | When you contact us to apply, we will place a hold on your account, so no disconnection action will be taken while your application is being processed. |

South Australia works a bit differently — most concessions are run directly by ConcessionsSA, not by us. If you are a resident of South Australia and meet the criteria outlined below, you can apply to ConcessionsSA, they approve it, and the credit then flows through to your Fig Energy bill.
ConcessionsSA Hotline: 1800 307 758 (weekdays 9am–5pm)
Once you’ve received your first Fig Energy bill, give ConcessionsSA a call on 1800 307 758 with your account number. They’ll make sure your concession follows you across and can backdate any missed credits.
South Australia’s main electricity discount.
What you get | This concession provides an annual payment towards your energy costs. The amount is set by the government each financial year and is calculated as a daily rate, so the credit on each bill may vary depending on the length of the billing period. For the most current concession amount, please visit the SA Government website. For most homeowners and tenants, the concession is paid as a credit directly on your electricity bill. |
Who it’s for | If you are a Fig Energy account holder, you must be a SA resident with a Pensioner Concession Card, DVA Gold Card (TPI/EDA/war widow), Low Income Health Care Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card — OR receiving a payment like JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Parenting Payment, Austudy, Special Benefit, Farm Household Allowance and a few others. Asylum seekers can also get this through their support service. |
How to get it | Apply directly to ConcessionsSA. |
Extra help if a medical condition means you need to use heating or cooling a lot.
What you get | The amount is set annually by the government. For the most current payment amount, please visit the SA Government website. |
Who it’s for | To be eligible, you must live at the property and be financially responsible for the energy bill; have (or be the parent or legal guardian of a child who has) a qualifying medical condition that is severely worsened by hot or cold weather, as certified by your medical practitioner; use an air conditioning unit to meet your medical heating and cooling needs; and hold an eligible concession card or receive an eligible Centrelink payment. |
How to get it | Get the Medical Heating and Cooling Concession form from the SA Government website, have it completed by your medical practitioner, and then email it to the address on the form. |
Emergency credit if you’re facing disconnection — arranged through a financial counsellor.
What you get | A one-off payment, applied straight to your electricity account. For more information , please visit the SA Government website. |
Who it’s for | SA customers in serious financial hardship with an electricity debt who’ve been disconnected or are at risk of it. |
How to get it | You can’t apply for this one yourself — it goes through a financial counsellor. Free help is available from the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 or the SA Financial Counsellors Association at safca.org.au. Your counsellor lodges the application for you. |
Good to know | Generally available once every three years. SA also has ConnectEd, a free state program offering case management and home energy assessments. |
